Why Grippers Are Still the Hardest Problem

Locomotion looks like the hard part of robotics because it is the part that appears in videos. A machine walking over rubble is legible as difficulty in a way that a machine picking up a strawberry is not.

Manipulation is harder. A gripper has to infer material properties it cannot see, apply force it cannot fully measure, and adapt within milliseconds when the object deforms or slips. Human hands solve this with roughly seventeen thousand mechanoreceptors feeding a control loop that never consciously surfaces.

The current generation of tactile sensors gives a robot maybe a few hundred noisy channels. Closing that gap is not a software problem waiting on a better model. It is a sensing problem, and sensing problems get solved in fabs, not in training runs.
